This has been a busy week with plenty of trips into London town for the Retail Solutions show at Excel and the European Retail Solutions Awards.
I enjoyed my journey out of the office to the show immensely, arrived at Canary Wharf by boat then got the DLR over to Excel where I met up with our account manager from EMAP. EMAP publishes Retail Week, where we had a wonderful article placed on our Data Sync deal with House of Fraser, written by Joanna Perry.
Joanna kicked off the award ceremony the following night at Old Billingsgate - a beautiful venue on the Thames. Our table, including guests from House of Fraser (who were nominated with Tec7 for Project Implemenation of the Year), BASDA and Mosaic, had a wonderful time, what with the stunning venue, good conversation and amusing host - Liverpudlian John Bishop!

So what is all the fuss about? Surely as a Retail outlet your relationship with your suppliers can help you get the stock you want onto the shop floor, but is it enough?

VAN – Value Added Network
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value-added_network

Many companies have been running EDI systems for years and years. They set up their network connections at the beginning of the implementation and have continued to use this connection using an old modem sat gathering dust in a corner of the computer room

How long will it take for this dust to get into the electronics and the next thing is you can’t receive those ever important orders.
But why are you still using a modem in this day and age, when FTP and AS2 are faster and today’s VANs focus on providing a secure and dependable service?
Also think to yourself, is your current VAN providing you with the most cost-efficient option? You change your mobile provider to get the better deal, so why not your VAN? When changing VAN you should be able to migrate your existing Trading Partner base without any disruption to them or your business and reduce your annual costs in the process.

Blogging – everyone’s doing it, it seems. I am for a start – based at Inovis in Guildford I am now a fully fledged member of the Inovis Blog team for EMEA, Stephen Fry seems to pop up as a top choice on Google for blogging and of course facebook.

It is the latter (sorry Mr. Fry) that I am interested in. Peter Jordan, chair of Global Commerce Initiative highlighted at the UK Inovis Customer Advisory Board Meeting (May of two thousand eight) how social networking sites such as facebook, youtube, myspace and blogging are not only becoming a major part of our lives (ever updated your status on your mobile phone, anyone?) but it is also affecting the supply chain by becoming the voice of the consumer.

Isn’t it interesting that GS1 are driving business benefits throughout the supply chain by holding their Global Data Synchronisation (GDS) conference at the Heritage Motor Centre?

In this day and age where everyone is complaining about the price of petrol, trying to cut costs and going green there are many ways that companies can help themselves.
EDI has been around for years allowing companies to send and receive structured information electronically, between and within businesses, organizations, government entities and other groups. This structured information emulates documents, for example purchase orders to automate purchasing. This in itself increases the accuracy and reliability of the documents, improving time and costs, in the ever increasing world of B2B commerce.
